The Training
Silica is a major constituent of many types of sand. It is also a component of concrete, some bricks and rocks (eg granite, slate, sandstone). This hazard can be found in industries such as construction, masonry, mining and foundries.
Breathing in fine crystalline silica dust can cause:
- Silicosis (an incurable lung disease). Silicosis may develop quickly depending on exposure levels. It is a potentially fatal condition
- Lung cancer (associated with silicosis)
- Kidney disease
- Increased risk of tuberculosis
- Possible increased risk of autoimmune diseases.
The Work Health and Safety regulations require that exposure to hazardous substances be prevented where practical.
We provide required to recognise the workplace health and safety risks and hazards inherent in working with crystalline silica containing products and to determine and plan for the implementation of safe systems of work aimed at reducing exposure to within mandatory exposure limits.
